On the evening of Wednesday in Holy Week we celebrate Tenebrae, meaning ‘shadows’ or ‘darkness’ in Latin, with music of great solemnity sung by the St Peter’s Cathedral Consort as we approach the Great Three Days of Christ’s Passion, Death and Resurrection.Central to Tenebrae is a large, triangular candelabrum known as a hearse, which holds 15 candles. As the liturgy progresses through psalms and readings, the candles are gradually extinguished. It is a wonderful, evocative, meditative, contemplative liturgy. No bookings required.
